Ardent

Blog post about Ardent, a web-based game made by me.

I started this project in 2016 not long after working on aMAZEment. My love for minesweeper and my love for procedural generation inspired me to create Ardent.

Ardent is a pastel RPG board-based game, with items and monsters placed on the game board. The power of monsters and the stats of items increase based on the number of monsters adjacent to them in the 8 directions. Players can only pick up items that are not surrounded by monsters, defeating monsters removes them from the board.

This meant if you have a rare case where a single item is surrounded by 8 monsters, it will be super powerful. Also if a monster is surrounded by multiple monsters or items, it will also scale in power. So players trying to rack up levels or get rare loot can manage their risk. If they don’t like the board, they can just regenerate it.

Ardent has been on hiatus since the end of 2016. I looked at the javascript codebase and I did a pretty good job. I think I could pick it up again one day if I have some time and desire to jump back into the past. Until then, enjoy playing the prototype! 😸
